I grew up in a little fishing community and my very first job was in the fishery where I spent many years lobster fishing with my Dad. Fishing goes back in my family many, many generations. I have a great love and a deep respect for the ocean; she’s in my blood!
Unfortunately my career on the water ended when my Dad retired and so I went from fishing to fashion when I started working at Sears. After eight years of creating displays and designing floor layouts I decided it was time for a change so the next stop was college at the NSCC where I graduated with honours and awards from the two-year Business/Marketing program. After college I held several temporary administrative positions until I found a home at the University Children’s Centre. I have enjoyed my role running the Main Office for several years now.
My favorite pastime, and some would say second career, is in photography. My husband, Scott, and I started taking an interest in photography back in 2007. It started with a love of landscape photography, and a few years later, a love of portrait photography. My free time is often spent with Scott exploring Nova Scotia looking for interesting subjects and that next great shot. Or, we could be off with our cameras attending a wedding, graduation, birthday, anniversary, etc.
One of my favourite sayings is, “Life may not be all we imagined it to be, but while we’re here, we might as well dance!”Well, with my camera, I like to capture “The Dance”. There are so many moments in life that are so very dear and special, and we are human, so we forget. Or, in the business of life, those moments just do not register. As an example I can tell you about my most cherished picture. It is not a posed photo, but a photo of a captured moment at our wedding by our photographer. After the ceremony my Mom congratulated me with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. My Mom always gave me the same hug when she saw me and the kiss was always on the apple of my left cheek. At the time I did not think much about the hug and kiss and in the excitement of the day, it was quickly forgotten. It was forgotten until three months later, when my Mom passed away. Now I am so very fortunate to be able to look at a picture of my Mom congratulating me with a kiss and hug on my most special day, in the most special way she had so many times before; and now when I see that picture, my heart floods with cherished memories.
I firmly believe the path to happiness is lined with love and laughter! I hope your life is filled with both…
I was born in Bronx, NY, USA, and spent the first 10 years of my life in White Plains, NY, USA. I moved to Nova Scotia in late 1972, and never looked back. I have lived in the Annapolis Valley region of Nova Scotia ever since.
I have always been artistic in one form or another. I used to draw a lot when I was a kid, and there was always music in my life as well. I picked up the guitar in my late teens and poured my heart and soul into music. Around 2005 I started to learn about photography, and by 2007 I was totally emerged in seeking as much knowledge as possible. I found several print on demand websites where I added some of my photographs, and started selling prints.
Being a life long music fan, I started documenting live performances of local bands, as well as world renowned performers as the opportunities arose, which has led to being hired by various bands to shoot their promotional photos. Of course my love of all things nautical has led to lots of landscapes and seascapes of this beautiful province I call home.
